Wiconisco, PA, Sewage Treatment Plant
Initiated and supervised by Steve Zeller, of Brinjac Engineering, Harrisburg, PA.
Launched: Early November 2006
950 sq ft of floating islands have been placed into one of two identical wastewater effluent ponds, and the effluent of each pond is being measured and compared. Both ponds are receiving vigorous aeration and circulation. Both have had Solar Bee circulator / aerators installed.
Recent test results are as follows:
total nitrogen values from Sept 2009 through Jan 2010
Date Control Test Improvement (mg/L)
9/11/09 13 9 4
9/25/09 10 7 3
10/09/09 12 20 -8
10/23/09 2 0 2
12/05/09 22 15 7
1/16/10 4 4 0
Average improvement: 1.33 mg/L (using all 6 points)
Average improvement: 3.20 mg/L (throwing out the outlier point)
The surface area of the islands is 950 square feet.
The difference in mass removed per day attributable to the islands was therefore:
25,000 gal/day * 3.79 L/gal * 1.33 mg/L * 1/950 sf = 133 mg/day*sf
If the outlier point is removed, the removal rate was:
25,000 gal/day * 3.79 L/gal * 3.20 mg/day *1/950 sf = 319 mg/day*sf
Note that these data were mostly collected during the cooler months. Frank Stewart
